The Oakleigh chargers have opened their winning account in a big way defeating the Eastern Rangers by 103 points in the second game at Visy Park on Sunday. The Oakleigh boys got on top early and never really let Eastern get a look in with their run from half back and through the middle.
It was a quick start for the Chargers as the kicked 6 goals to one in the first quarter but it could have been bigger as they also kicked 6 behinds - a few of which should have been converted. Eastern played their best quarter of the day in the second term kicking 4.2 to 2.3 and were playing better as a unit but the Chargers came out after half time and ran the Ranges off the park kicking 14 goals to 3. Eastern stopped to a walk, unable to kick a goal in the last quarter which was not what they would have been looking for to kick the season off.
The better players for Oakleigh where Seb Gotch who kicked 4 goals and was a live wire in the forward half, Matt Arnott who did the power house work in the middle and put on several big bumps and Dom Tyson who cleared the ball well in the middle and set up some good passages of play.
Ruck man Chris Prowse worked hard around the ground and took some good marks, Dean Siakoulis was in the play most of the day, Sam Hudson provided some good quick run and a few goals while others to do well were Curran, Breust and Purcell.
Eastern Ranges best were their captain Jonathon Patton who took some big marks and kicked 5 goals, defender Pat Lawler provided some good work from the back half along with midfielder Alex Greenwood who was a solid possession winner all day. Cope won a lot of hit outs in the ruck and Slattery, Palmer, Toce, Mill and Sargent did some good things during the game.
All in all a dominant early win for Oakleigh setting them off on a good note while Eastern will be looking to turn their fortunes around and get their season back on track this week against the Jets.
