Finals spots are on the line, and there are some important games this weekend that will help shape finals positions in the TAC Cup as Ben Cavarra reports.
Dandenong Stingrays vs. Sandringham Dragons: Shepley Oval:
Sandringham are sitting in second position on the ladder whilst Dandenong are seventh and trying to cement a spot in the top eight. The Stingrays are hitting form at the right time of the year. They have won their past 3 games, with a big win over Geelong last weekend by 40 points, with Nicholas Haynes kicking 4 goals straight and Darren Minchington capping off a best on ground performance with 3 goals. Sandringham had a big win in the last round beating the Ranges by 64 points, with 9 different goal kickers and Matthew Kreymborg kicking 4. However it was Liam Sumner who was their best player on the ground, with 11 tackles and 3 goals to his name.
Northern Knights vs. Murray Bushrangers: Highgate Recreation Reserve:
The Knights are coming off a 32 point victory over Bendigo, while the Bushrangers continue their poor form, they lost by 27 points to Gippsland, with that being their fifth loss in a row. Douglas Morris was the best for the Knights last weekend, racking up 36 possessions and 2 goals, whilst Billy Longer dominated in the ruck with 35 hit-outs and 2 goals. Jake Reeves was dominant in the ruck for the Bushrangers with 30 hit-outs and 6 tackles.
Western Jets vs. Bendigo Pioneers: Queen Elizabeth Oval:
Western Jets continued their brilliant form last round with a 30 point victory over the Rebels. Bendigo on the other hand has lost their past 4 games, and continues their recent run of poor form, losing to the Knights by 32 points on the weekend. Thomas Stevens was the best for Bendigo last weekend, with 28 possessions, while Ethan Foreman and Oliver Wines both kicked 2 goals. Jack Charleston was the best for the Jets with 15 possessions and a goal, while William Hoskin-Elliott, Jordan Mead and Mitchell Turnbull each kicking 2 goals.
Geelong Falcons vs. Eastern Ranges: Skilled Stadium:
This is a must win game for the Ranges, as they sit 6 points outside the eight, while Geelong are looking to cement a spot in the top eight. Geelong is coming off a 40 point loss to Dandenong. Zak Sherman was the best for the Falcons with 37 disposals, 17 handball receives and 1 goal to his name, while Tristan Battaglia kicked 2. The Ranges lost by 64 points in round 14 to the Dragons, with Jonathon Patton kicking 3 goals, and Leif Cope being the best player for the Ranges with 18 disposals and dominating in the ruck with 26 hit-outs.
Oakleigh Chargers vs. Gippsland Power: Warrawee Park:
Gippsland Power are up and about after winning their third game in a row by 27 points over the Bushrangers and still sitting nicely on top of the ladder. Oakleigh the lost by 42 points to Calder, and need to win to stay in finals contention. Timothy Membrey was best on ground for the Power on the weekend, kicking 6 goals and taking 7 marks. Daniel Pearce was the best for the Chargers, having 19 disposals and kicking 2 goals.
North Ballarat Rebels vs. Calder Cannons: Horsham City Oval:
This is the match of the round, 3rd vs. 4th the Cannons are one game clear of the Rebels, but whichever team comes out to play, will be the victors on the day. Calder won last round by 42 points over Oakleigh, with Daniel Markworth kicking 5 goals, and Thomas Sheridan and Damien Bugeja both dominating. The Rebels lost to the Western Jets by 30 points, with Scott Spriggs, Brayden Ison and Sam Dobson each kicking 2 goals, while Coleman Schache was their best player. This will be a very competitive game, but how much the Rebels miss key players to St Patrick’s in the MCC Herald Sun Shield might tell in the result.
