This is the last round in what has been a successful TAC CUP 2011 season. With the top 8 still not yet decided, this will be a thrilling week of football as Ben Cavarra previews each match.
Sandringham Dragons vs. Western Jets, Highgate Recreation Reserve;
Both teams are sitting in the top 4 of the ladder, and with both teams coming off a win on the weekend. They will be looking to continue their good form into the lead up to their finals campaign. Jack Beech dominated the ruck for the Dragons in their 4 point win over Gippsland, with Jackson Heagney-Steart being their best player. Jaxon Cooke and Lachlan Fairley were dominant in the forward line for the Jets, combining for a total of 9 goals between them, while William Hoskin-Elliott was their best player with 30 disposals.
Bendigo Pioneers vs. Dandenong Stingrays, Highgate Recreation Reserve;
Dandenong have continued their good form with a 67 point win over Eastern. Bendigo suffered a 114 point loss to Oakleigh, and will be looking to finish the season off on a good note for their departing coach Mark Ellis. Dandenong have a chance of making the top 4, and will be looking to make the most of their opportunities. Brett O'Hanlon capped off a best on ground performance with 4 goals, with Lachlan Whitfield also kicking 3 goals. Ethan Foreman kicked 3 for the Pioneers on the weekend with Nathan McCarty being their best player.
Gippsland Power vs. Calder Cannons, Highgate Recreation Reserve;
This is the match of the round, with 1st placed Calder Cannons taking on the 3rd placed Gippsland Power. Calder came out of last weekend’s game with a hard-fought victory over the Knights by 5 points, with Liam Mcbean and Jack Solomon both kicking 4 goals, while Brandyn Grenfell was their best. Gippsland lost a close game last weekend going down to Sandringham by 4 points. Shaun Marusic was the Powers best player while Hayden Hector was also impressive with 7 tackles and 1 goal. Both teams have been at the top half of the ladder for the whole year, and this match might show us what to expect when finals come.
Geelong Falcons vs. Oakleigh Chargers, Visy Park (Princes Park);
This is a must win game for the Chargers, because if they win they are guaranteed to play finals, while Geelong would also be looking for a win, to get good form before finals after losing to Western on the weekend by 58 points. Samuel Gordon kicked 4 goals for the Falcons on the weekend, with Cameron Williams being their best player. Oakleigh had a day out on the weekend, beating the Pioneers by 114 points. Jake Hammond kicked 7 goals, while Thomas Curran kicked 5 goals in a best on ground performance.
Murray Bushrangers vs. Eastern Ranges, Visy Park (Princes Park);
With both teams unable to make the finals now, they will be looking to finish off the season on a good note. Eastern lost on the weekend by 67 points to Dandenong, with Michael Bussey being their best player, while Leif Cope was also impressive with 20 hit-outs. Murray Bushrangers won a close game on the weekend, beating North Ballarat by 9 points. Sam Milne was the best for the Bushrangers on the weekend, while Jake Reeves dominated the ruck with 28 hit-outs.
Northern Knights vs. North Ballarat Rebels, Visy Park (Princes Park);
This is a must win game for the Knights if they are going to play finals football this year, while the Rebels will be looking to get another victory over the Knights this year, after beating them by 67 points in round 10 this year. Nicholas Maric was the best for the Knights on the weekend, while Billy Longer dominated the ruck with 27 hit-outs, and also kicked 2 goals. Nicholas O'Brien kicked 3 for the Rebels on the weekend, and was also awarded the (Neale Daniher Medal) for being the best on ground player in the MCC Herald Sun Shield game for his school the week before. This should be a very close game; with the team that comes out to play will be the victorious team on the day.
