Last week showed that finals is a different ball game compared to the regular season, with upsets occurring and close games happening, and this week shapes up to be no different as Ben Cavarra reports.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11
Semi Final 1: Calder Cannons vs. Western Jets, Visy Park (Princes Park)
Calder would be disappointed after losing on the weekend, after leading for the whole match. They lost by 3 points to the Stingrays, but they will need to forget about that as they have a big match this weekend against a spirited Western Jets, who defeated Geelong by 18 points on the weekend.
Liam McBean kicked 2 goals on the weekend for the Cannons, and Brandon Ellis was their best player with 26 disposals and 7 marks. Lachlan Fairley kicked 4 goals for the Jets, while Sam Critchley was their best.
The last time these two teams met was in round 8, and Calder won that encounter by 67 points. This is an elimination Semi Final, with one team going to progress to the next round, and one team going to bow out, this should be a close game.
Semi Final 2: Gippsland Power vs. Oakleigh Chargers, Visy Park (Princes Park)
Gippsland suffered a 44 point loss on the weekend against Sandringham, and will be looking to make up for the loss, but it will not be an easy task, they face Oakleigh, who defeated North Ballarat by 20 points on the weekend.
Oakleigh won their last encounter, in round 15 by 12 points. However, they played earlier in the year, Gippsland winning their round 6 encounter by 43 points. Danny Butcher was the best for the Power on the weekend with 26 disposals, while Jordan Staley had 22 hit-outs in the ruck.
Adam Tomlinson was the best for the Chargers on the weekend, while Antony Forato impressed with 27 hit-outs. With both teams winning one game each this year, this should be a great encounter, with both teams going to be desperate for the victory, as they now know, they need to win to play next week.
