AFL Victoria has been holding an Under 16 Metro Carnival over the current School Holidays.
This Carnival brings upon the pointy end of a program that has been running since the end of 2011. Metro Regions have been training squads of approximately 40 players aged 16 and under leading up to this round-robin carnival. From these squads, Regions have selected their best 24 or 25 players to compete last Tuesday 3rd April at Highgate Recreation Reserve, and Tuesday 10th April at Avalon Airport Oval.
The Carnival provides Academy Selectors with the opportunity to choose 50 players to participate in a three week intensive program. This program will include;
- Fitness testing
- Reinforcement of correct training practices
- Skill execution under pressure
- Decision making activities
- Written feedback on involvement in the initial program
From this program, a squad of 35 players will be selected for further training and a team of 25 thereafter for the Under 16 Nationals Competition.
In addition, several AFL Clubs will have recruiters present at the U16 Metro Carnival. Clubs can therefore flag potential players to watch travel through the TAC Cup and other competitions in future years.
