For the second successive year, the Northern Knights and North Ballarat Rebels players’ have joined forces, to take part in a driving activity leading up their round 6 TAC Cup clash. Both sides will ask all Learner Drivers to drive to the clash between the two teams at Eureka Stadium, North Ballarat this Saturday.
This TAC Initiative will provide an opportunity for all ‘L’ Plate drivers from both teams, to gain over an hour’s driving experience in a range of various driving conditions. In the Knights case, they will experience both city streets and country highways, as they embark on their journey from metropolitan Melbourne to North Ballarat. Whilst the Rebels drivers will gain valuable experience and encounter different factors such as sealed and unsealed roads in rural western Victoria.
Knights Region Manager Peter Kennedy believes the driving activity helps build driving confidence in the players.
“Both Clubs care about the safety and well being of our Squad members and are committed to conveying TAC’s ‘Speed Hurts’ message to our players, their parents and the wider football community” Kennedy said.
It is a concept well supported by the North Ballarat Rebels as well, who despite not travelling as far, will still need to tackle different road conditions.
“It's important as a program we give our players every opportunity to experience driving on all road conditions and in different weather conditions. The more opportunities our players have to log their Learner hours we believe will make them into a more confident and safer drivers in the future,” North Ballarat Region Manager Phil Partington said.
“This is the 2nd year we have joined forces with the Northern Knights to help promote the L120 message. It's an opportunity for players and parents to meet prior to game and discuss their driving experiences and it's also great to compare the driving experiences between the City and Country Players.”
Road crashes are the biggest killer of young people aged 16 to 25. In their first year of driving, young people are about three times more likely to be killed or injured than older more experienced drivers. However, extensive research has shown that by gaining valuable driving practice in a range of different driving conditions, young drivers can reduce their risk of crashing by up to a third.
Both the Northern Knights and North Ballarat Rebels fully support this TAC Initiative and agree that Learner Drivers, driving to the ground with their parents, is a valuable activity to boost their hours and gain further experience behind the wheel.
Rival teams, united in this cause, will soon turn to an onfield battle for the 4 points.
