Day two of the NAB AFL Combine saw speed and agility as the key areas being tested at Etihad Stadium.
It was a long day of waiting for the Combine participants, after a fault with the 20m sprint equipment in the morning meant the 20m sprint and 30m repeat sprint went back to back later in the day.
American Marvin Baynham was the name on everyone’s lips after the sprints, recording a best time of 2.81 seconds – placing him in the top five of all-time best sprints, just six seconds behind the best mark set by former Gold Coast Sun Joel Wilkinson back in 2010 of 2.75. Baynahm, who at 198cm has played college basketball, American Football as well as athletics, recorded the best time just a day after smashing former North Ballarat player Dean Towers’ vertical jump record (85cm) with a standing jump of 88cm. also recorded a sub 2.9 time, coming in at 2.87
Northern Knights leading goal kicker Reece McKenzie proved his speed recording the second best time of 2.87, equal with West Australian Jarrod Pickett and North Adelaide’s Oleg Markov. just ahead of
Others to record a sub three second score were Western Jet Connor Menadue with 2.88,.Geelong Falcons pair of Teia Miles and Hugh Goddard (2.98), Sandringham Dragon Ed Langdon (2.92) and Braydon Maynard (2.98), Eastern Ranges Daniel Nielson (2.98), Murray Bushranger pair of Dougal Howard (2.98) and Nathan Drummond (2.93), Gippsland Power’s Jordan Cunico (2.94),Northern Knights’ Jason Castagna (2.99) and Kyle Langford (2.98), Calder Cannon Matt Goodyear (2.97) and Oakleigh Chargers Daniel McKenzie and Billy Gowers (2.94).
In the 30m repeat sprint, Drummond again featured in the top 10 with the second best time of 23.95, .02 seconds behind NT Thunders Nakia Cockatoo. Three TAC Cup players rounded out the top five times: Daniel Nielson (Eastern Ranges) 23.99, Daniel McKenzie (Oakleigh Chargers) 24.02 and Ed Langdon (Sandringham Dragons) 24.06.
In the agility test, Oakleigh Chargers’ Daniel McKenzie recorded the best TAC Cup time of 8.10, just .01 behind West Australian Clem Smith. Also featuring in the top 10 were Teia Miles(Geelong Falcons) 8.27, Lukas Webb (Gippsland Power) 8.28, Kyle Langford (Northern Knights) 8.36 and Jack Lonie (Dandenong Stingrays (8.37).
Day one saw four TAC Cup players feature in the top 10 for the standing vertical jump – Nathan Drummond (Murray Bushrangers) 76, Christina Petracca (Eastern Ranges) 74, Nicholas Coughlan (Murray Bushrangers) 72 and Reece McKenzie (Northern Knights) 72.
In the running vertical jump, with the two Americans Evan Bruinsma (97) and Baynham (95) setting the mark, Oakleigh Chargers Daniel McKenzie finished in third spot with 94, teammate Billy Gowers 93 and Murray Bushranger Nathan Drummond completing a top 10 finish in both jumps with 90.
Day 3 of the combine sees goal kicking, handball/clean hands and kicking accuracy, with the beep test to complete the day.
