IN TIGHT: Glenrowan’s Gus Gray looks to get the ball out amid heavy tackling pressure from his Tarrawingee opponents. PHOTO: Marc Bongers
A BLITZING second quarter by Glenrowan in a true definition of a winter battle, as well as a five-goal haul to Nigel Robinson saw the Kelly Tigers turn on the afterburners to run away with a 17-point victory over Tarrawingee on Saturday.
It was a see-sawing contest in challenging conditions with tackling pressure setting tensions high between the teams early.
The Bulldogs raced out of the blocks, using the football in the clinches to precision to open up the Tigers through the middle of the ground and set up their forwards with a number of kicks to advantage.
Glenrowan was winning its fair share of the football but the now trademark team defence from Tarrawingee forced the Tigers to continually handball to a player under pressure, with the Bulldogs forcing turnovers through the likes of Sam Peters, Jason Cook and Cam Kennedy.
The quick ball movement allowed Kyle Raven to create a contest upon every entry and while the Tiger defenders dropped back to stop the goal kicking machine from having too much of an impact, this allowed Matthew Wilson, Daniel Salmon and Peters to lock the ball inside Tarrawingee’s forward 50 to create multiple scoring chances.
