MILAWA’S hopes of triumph in 2017 have been dealt a heavy blow, with star ruckman Brent Newton leaving the club to take on the senior coaching position at Chiltern.
Newton, a two-time premiership player and 2015 club champion, has carried a heavy load with the Demons and has been regarded as the most damaging ruckman in the Ovens and King since returning from a two year stint with Wangaratta Magpies in 2011 and ’12.
The 27-year-old informed Milawa co-coach Josh Owen of his decision to leave the Demons last Friday, and has since signed with the Swans.
While he is excited about the move, Newton said leaving Milawa was tough.
“I’ve got a lot of good mates at Milawa, I’ve played in a couple of flags there and have had some special times,” Newton said.
“Milawa is a great club and it was definitely a hard decision to move on, but I’m sure at some stage I will be back.
