The annual TAC Cup Fitness Testing Day took place on Saturday March 11 at Maribyrnong Secondary College.
TAC Cup players from all 12 clubs had their dimensions measured and completed the beep test, 20m sprint, agility test, vertical jump and running vertical jump.
From the players tested on the day, the Dandenong Stingrays have the tallest list in the TAC Cup this year (average of 187.4cm), almost two centimetres on average greater than the next tallest list. Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Ned Reeves is the TAC Cup’s tallest player for 2017 though, with the over-age player measuring in at 206.6cm, while the Gippsland Power’s 2016 Morrish Medal equal-runner-up Callan McKeon is the competition’s smallest player at 163.2cm.
The Geelong Falcons were the best endurance runners, recording a team average result of level 13.12 in the beep test, while the Chargers were the quickest, recording a team average time of 3.06 seconds in the 20m sprint.
The GWV Rebels proved to be the most agile outfit, recording a team average time of 8.44 seconds in the agility test, with the Sandringham Dragons reaching higher than all others to record a team average result of 63.6cm in the vertical jump.
AFL Victoria Head of Athlete Management Matt Glossop said Fitness Testing Day was important for TAC Cup players beyond just testing well physically.
"For AFL recruiters, it’s not just about the numbers," Glossop said. "Most clubs send at least one representative and they're looking at things than can’t be measured too: how the athletes behave within their group, what their running style is like and how much fight they have at the end of a beep test in tough conditions.
"Players are also exposed to education sessions throughout the day on current issues such as performance enhancing and illicit drugs, gambling and respectful relationships."
From a physical point of view though, Glossop singled out Sandringham's Kai Owens and GWV's Keegan Gray for beating the all-time Fitness Testing Day record for the running vertical jump, as well as the Northern Knights' Jack Petruccelle for recording the second-fastest-ever time in the 20m sprint behind current Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw and GWV's Ethan McLaren for recording the second-fastest-ever time in the agility test.
2017 was also the first time girls were involved in Fitness Testing Day, with five players from each TAC Cup Girls team testing alongside their male counterparts. The top result for each girls' test can be been at the bottom of the page.
