The Murray Bushrangers have announced former Sydney Swans and Hawthorn player Leon Higgins as coach of the Murray Bushrangers for the 2016 & 2017 TAC CUP Seasons. Higgins who played 122 AFL games has spent recent years coaching within the AFL VICTORIA talent pathway including as Murray Bushrangers Under 16 Coach and as coach of this season’s undefeated Victorian Country Under 16 team.
Talent Manager Lee Fraser said that Higgins had ticked all the boxes, “Leon followed an outstanding 11 year AFL career by coaching within our region and since then has remained committed to coaching within the talent pathway through the TAC CUP and National Championships at Under 16 & Under 18 level”.
“In this time he has demonstrated a great ability to work with & develop talented young men both as footballers and importantly as people” Fraser added “Leon is respected by all at the football club, within the region and throughout the AFL industry, we are all looking forward to working with him”. “Throughout the interview process it was clear that Leon has a real passion for coaching and has a sense of commitment to football within the region, a region in which he grew up playing the game himself”.
In addition to Leon’s strong football background he has spent 17 years in the Victorian Police Force where he has spent recent years working as a Youth Resource Officer. It is in this role that Leon has developed extraordinary skills engaging with young people, this skill set will be a great asset to our football club and the region .
Higgins was thrilled to accept the role “I believe it is a position of privilege and it is a role that I have worked towards for a number of years. I would like to thank the Murray Bushrangers and AFL Victoria for the opportunity and I look forward to working with the regions talented junior footballers to achieve their full potential in footy and also as young men within their communities.
The Murray Bushrangers TAC CUP squad will commence training on Sunday 15 November at the Wangaratta Showgrounds.
