CALDER Cannons will be hunting their first win of the TAC Cup season when Oakleigh Chargers visit Rams Arena on Sunday.
The Cannons were made to pay for a sluggish first quarter by Western Jets on Saturday, falling to an 11.19 (85) to 8.6 (54) defeat at home.
Calder was 24 points down at quarter-time in the Round 2 fixture after conceding 10 scoring shots in the first term.
The home side hit back with a five-goal second quarter as majors from Curtis Taylor and Daniel Hanna cut the margin to 12 points eight minutes into the term.
The Jets responded with two goals of their own, before Jake Riccardi and Sam Graham drew the Cannons to within 13 points.
Graham had two goals for the quarter when he kicked truly in time on, although a late major from Western’s Zak Butters stretched the visitors’ cushion to 21 points at the main break.
Calder faced an uphill battle when the Jets slammed on three goals to one in the third quarter, Mohammed Moustafa registering the Cannons’ only major as Andrew Johnston’s side went to three-quarter-time with a 34-point deficit to reel in.
The Jets held firm for 13 minutes before Moustafa and Shane Skidmore gave Calder hope of a miracle comeback by cutting the margin to 25.
However it was not to be for the Cannons, who have a 0-2 record after two rounds ahead of Oakleigh’s visit.
Tireless defender Mitch Podhajski, Riccardi and Patrick Brookes were named Calder’s best players in the loss to Western, while Graham and Moustafa were the side’s multiple goalkickers.
Sunday’s match against the Chargers kicks off at 3pm at Rams Arena.
