It was a sad day for the return for Jets co-captain Lucas Rocci as his team were outclassed by a hungry Eastern Rangers. The Ranges were extremely clean in the wet and walked away 63 point winners.
From the opening bounce, the Jets thought they would face the same team they eliminated from last years final series. They were in for a shock as hit-outs, clearances, and goals were all favouring the Eastern Ranges. Darcy Cassar proved to be a weapon in defence, but the Jets backline was overwhelmed by the Ranges who kicked six unanswered goals in the first term.
The Ranges continued their good form in the second quarter kicking the first goal. Western's situation had become dire as they needed somebody to stand up and hit the scoreboard. It was Zen Christofi who finally broke the drought. Josh Honey followed up with another major for the Jets as a dribbler just snuck through the big sticks to give the Jets some momentum. It was quickly shut down as the Ranges peppered their attacking 50 to score a goal late to finish the half.
The third term had the Jets rearrange their midfield, Daly Andrews had been fighting hard all day but lacked the support of his fellow rovers. It was here that Kyle Borg was placed in the midfield to even the odds. Borg pushed forward from the stoppages and managed to earn a free in front of goal. He made no mistake, however, the Ranges replied instantly and the margin was starting to weigh on the Jets. Aaron Clarke managed to kick a goal late to end the quarter but the Ranges tripled the Jets score.
The final act had the Jets flat-footed, small chipping handpasses by Western proved damaging as Eastern began to pick their pockets. Emerson Jekka had a consolation prize late but the damage by the Ranges was too great and the Jets couldn't catch them. Effort and attitude were lost by the Jets last Sunday, but this week is a new game and the Jets can only move forward.
Hero of the Day: Darcy Cassar
Cassar was handed this new role in defence which he had never previously played before. He delivered in spades. Cassar's defensive work and intercept marks had him win more ball than the rest of his team. He finished the game with 26 disposals, 7 marks, and 7 rebounds, a true standout in a poor game.
