Last Sunday at Downer Oval, the Western Jets managed to defeat the Bendigo Pioneers to secure their fifth win of the season.
The game started off with Bendigo controlling most of the ball early. Their hard work was undone quickly as Daniel Pantelleresco kicked the opening goal on return. Kyle Borg was next to kick truly as Western was making the best of their opportunities. Lucas Rocci had started off well down back as he has proven to be a real General in defence.
Bendigo would fire back late in the term with two goals but Samuel Clifford gave the Jets the lead to finish the quarter.
The second term had Bendigo come out with all guns blazing. Aaron Clarke was filling in the ruck duties this week but was outmatched by his opponent. Hit-outs to advantage were smashing the Jets as the Pioneers hit the front. Speed on the outside was Bendigo's advantage as the Jets wingers were getting sucked into the contest. The Pioneers led the first half by seven points as the Jets had to regroup.
The third act saw the Jets kick into gear. Archie Manton finally hit the scoreboard and was quickly complemented by Clifford soon after. Cassius White was showing a new meaning to the word haste as his speed made a real difference in the Jets forward line. Declan Edwards piled on another major for the Jets just before the quarter ended.
The final term was a one-sided affair. The Jets absolutely pantsed the Pioneers by keeping them goalless and bringing the pain on the scoreboard. Clifford went berserk as he booted to goals to end the day with four. Luke Heaney was also impressive, given his new role up forward, he finished the game with two goals. Pantelleresco claimed his second major in the dying minutes to end a well-fought game.
Hero of the day: Samuel Clifford
With Aaron Clarke being pushed up the ground, somebody had to stand up in the forward line and that was Clifford. Making the most of his opportunities he finished the game with 4.1 goals making him a very important cog in the Jets machine.
