In a very tight contest, the Jets managed to survive the Rebels in the dying minutes of the game. The final score saw the Western Jets 9.4(58) defeat the GWV Rebels 7.9(51) by seven points.
The Rebels started off proceedings with real intent, their pressure was up but the Jets were defending well. Lucas Rocci was busy as always with Josh Kellett supporting strongly. In a saw swing affair, the game was going back and forth with only
minor scores. Mace Cousins finally broke the ice by kicking the first goal of the game. The Rebels quickly responded with their own major, but Eddie Ford and Kyle Borg kicked a goal each to give the Jets a handy buffer to end the first term.
The second term had the Jets start off positive with Josh Honey finding space directly in front of goal. He made no mistake as the Rebels were trailing badly. GWV would then raise the intensity, they controlled the clearances and began to pepper the goal face. Unfortunately for them, they only managed behinds heading into halftime.
The third act saw Lars Vidovic stand tall and get out the back to claim his first major for the day. A dry spell then lasted for most of the term. Defensive efforts on both ends were superb especially through Kellett, Rocci, and even Cody Raak was having a real influence. The Rebels kicked one late but the Jets responded through Nash Reynolds to maintain the advantage. With only seconds left, GWV booted another goal late as they began to trim back the margin.
The final term started off with another tug of war which seemed to dominate most of the game. The Jets finally got off the leash as slingshot play from defence ended with Harrison Schumann kicking his first major of the day. The Rebels struck back with back to back goals which saw the Jets lead by only one point.
The Jets were desperate not to let the game slip away and Archie Manton made sure of it. The tall timber booted two goals with the game in the balance to take the wind out of the Rebels sails and win the game. The Rebels continued to press and goaled but time ran out and the Jets survived.
Hero of the day: Josh Kellett
Kellett had been a star down back, combined with Lucas Rocci and Cody Raak, they really held down the defence. Kellett ended the game with 26 disposals, 9 marks, and 9 rebounds.
