In the last match of the home and away season, the Knights got their revenge against the Jets last Saturday with a convincing win. The final score saw Northern Knights 10.8(68) defeat the Western Jets 4.12(36) at Avalon Airport Oval.
From the sounding of the first siren, the Jets brought the intensity early but managed only a few behinds. Josh Honey was busy in the midfield and Lucas Rocci was playing the perfect quarterback in defence. Archie Manton broke the ice with the Jets first goal as the tall timber was eager to repeat his performance from last week.
The Knights were held scoreless for the opening ten minutes but managed to kick back to back goals to take the lead and end the quarter.
The Knights began the second term with a full assault. The Jets dropped their guards and Northern scored six unanswered goals for the term. Cody Raak and Josh Kellett tried desperately to stem the flow but were ultimately overrun by Knights pressure.
The third term turned into a game of basketball as both sides slingshotted only minor scores for 15 minutes straight. Unfortunately, some undisciplined play by the Jets had the Knights line up directly in front of the big sticks to score their ninth.
Luckily, Manton responded with a beautiful snap around the corner to raise the Jets' spirits. But Northern quickly responded before the siren. Missed opportunities had come back to haunt the Jets as they head into the final term.
From here the game was out of reach but Manton would claim his third goal after a great contested mark had him kick from 40 meters out. Aaron Clarke was next to kick his first major of the day but the game belonged to the Knights.
The Wildcard Round is on for next week with the Jets facing the GWV Rebels on Sunday. Last time these two teams met, it was the Jets just escaping the Rebels by seven points. Let's hope the Jets can bounce back as they enter the finals.
Hero of the day: Lucas Rocci
Rocci played hard all day his skill and run and carry was a real highlight for the Jets in a poor game. He finished off with 17 disposals, 4 marks, and 5 rebounds.
