Tough midfielder Hamish Paynter took out the Knights Best & Fairest on Sunday night from Michael Hurley and David Zaharakis.
As late as Round 16 Hurley led the count, but he got injured in the second quarter in Round 17 and didn’t poll for the rest of the season. Paynter polled enough votes in the final three games to take the lead and capture the prestigious award, previously won by the likes of Nick Stevens, Ben Johnson and Matthew Kreuzer.
The softly spoken Paynter was humble in acceptance, thanking his parents and the Northern Knights.
Earlier in the night Paynter won the Most Valuable Player for the team, which takes into consideration one percent efforts and overall value to the team. Steven Kelly was named the Most Courageous Player, while Michael Still doubled up with Most Improved Player and Leading Goal Kicker. Bottom aged rover Kane Lambert won the Coaches Award.
Awards were also issued to U/16 Max Richardson Squad players. Josh Caddy won Best Player, while Alex Rintoul won the Coaches Award. Both Caddy and Rintoul are in line for selection for the NAB AFL U/16 National Championship Grand Final between Vic Metro and WA, which will be played at the MCG as a curtain raiser to the AFL Grand Final on Saturday.
